Soil is a complex thing. While not visible to the eye, soil contains a web of bacteria, fungi, mites and organisms that release mineral nutrients and create a good, loose soil structure. Some of these microorganisms prevent diseases and help your plants withstand insect attacks. Successful gardening is all about building good, healthy soil.

Here are a few tips for building soil in your vegetable and flower garden beds:

1.      Revitalize your soil every year by adding compost, manure, grass clippings and peat moss. All of these things contribute living nutrients to your soil.
2.      Avoid compacting the soil. Never step on a garden bed. Roots can’t grow as well in dense, compacted soil. Amending your soil with peat moss helps keep soil light and fluffy.
3.      If you are going to use fertilizer, use organic fertilizer. The benefits of chemical-based fertilizers are short lived and ultimately harm your soil organisms. Remember that gardening is all about building good soil!
4.      Whenever possible, avoid disrupting the soil. Tilling breaks down the beneficial fungi and surface-layer organisms that you are trying to create.
5.      Be aware that using a landscape fabric or weed barrier can inhibit good soil conditions by placing a barrier between your plants and the soil nutrients they need. If you need to smother weeds, a better choice is to try sheet-mulching, which gets rid of weeds while building good soil.
